How to Adopt a Highway in New York

New York State's Adopt-A-Highway Program has existed since 1990. Today volunteers have adopted approximately 5,000 miles of state highways and kept them free of trash. Step1
Be sure you are ready to do the required work when you adopt a highway in New York State. You and your team will have to pick up litter along your adopted highway, which is usually a stretch 2 miles long, four times a year for 2 years.

Step2
Contact your county's Adopt-A-Highway coordinator to find out which sections of highway are suitable and available for adoption. In most cases you can adopt any section that is not already adopted, but sometimes an area may be deemed unsuitable because of volume of traffic or dangerous design.

Step3
Complete and submit a Highway Work Permit from the New York State Department of Transportation. Your county's Adopt-A-Highway coordinator will provide you with the form, and you will not have to pay the standard permit fee.

Step4
Prepare for some well-deserved recognition. Once the permit is signed, the New York State Department of Transportation will notify the local media of the adoption and erect a sign in your honor along your section of adopted highway.

Step5
Attend the required safety briefing conducted by the New York State Department of Transportation and receive the necessary orange safety gear and trash disposal bags.

Step6
Begin your honorable work cleaning up your adopted highway!

Step1
Make sure you are ready for the commitment. When you become a part of the Rhode Island Adopt-A-Highway Program, you are committing to removing trash on both sides of the highway along a 2-mile stretch, 4 times a year for 2 years.

Step2
Fill out an Adopt-A-Highway application. This form outlines all the obligations involved in adopting a highway and lets you request specific sections of roadway. It must be signed and returned to a Rhode Island Adopt-A-Highway coordinator before you can begin your cleanup sessions.

Step3
Obtain the required safety training and information provided by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. This will include an informative safety video.

Step4
Decide what name you would like written on your two free Adopt-A-Highway signs. Think carefully because you only have 28 characters to work with!

Step5
Notify the maintenance facility in your area 5 days before a scheduled cleanup. The maintenance facility will provide you with the necessary safety vests, work gloves, trash bags and safety warning signs.

Step6
Designate a safety leader for your group. This person will ensure that group members stay safe and that the "Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup Crew" warning signs remain upright within a mile of each working group member.

Step7
Leave filled trash bags at the highway work site and notify your maintenance facility that they are ready for pickup.

Step8
Submit a cleanup report card, either online or by mail, after each cleanup session. This report serves as a tracking device to make sure your group cleans up at least 4 times a year.
