Marty's Amazing Kayaking Adventure
This is a web page about my newest favorite pastime... that is, of course, kayaking! I recently found out about it from my best friend Adam, who is unfortunately not with me or I'd have him tell you all about it. He's the real expert, you know. He's been doing it for several years now, and even though he lives in central Michigan, which you'd think would not be a great Kayaking Mecca, he still goes Yakking (that's what he calls it) as often as possible. Recently, we got together for our annual buddy-trip vacation, and it was his turn to plan what we'd do, and guess what it was that he decided upon?

We took a trip down the Captain George River, which is located in the northwest corner of Colorado. Originally, Adam thought we'd just go by ourselves, but then we found a group rate that was a lot cheaper. I thought it would be really scary, but after Adam showed me the most rudimentary ways to get around, and especially how to right myself if I tipped over, I have to confess I was pretty excited to get going. There's something thrilling about traveling through those waters in a single-person vessel! I took a few spills, and by the time we arrived at the first camp for the night I was soaking wet, but even then I knew that I'd be doing this again and again.

One thing you might not know is that technically, a "kayak" is a boat that only male Eskimos would use. Females in Inuit or Eskimo tribes would use an "umiak". Our river guide told us this, which I thought was pretty interesting. Adam just looked bored. Some day, maybe I'll be as experienced as him, and will not be able to wait to take on really tremendous rapids in my very own kayak!
