Welcome -  I hope you enjoy your visit.  I'm a British citizen but these days I live and work in The Netherlands. As a result of this I'm working hard to study Dutch.

Garrard 401 Plinth

This page describes a project to build a plinth for a vintage Garrard 401 turntable together with a Rega RB250 arm.

These old turntables can sound absolutely great in the right plinth, but unfortunately most plinths end up taking up a lot of space. I didn't want mine to do that - but it took up a lot of my time instead.
Travels In Taiwan

In 2005 and 2006 I worked for a total of 10 months in Taiwan. This island and its people made a deep impression on me. Taiwan was where I first experienced culture shock, but later I learned to love this country, its mountains, wonderful food and its very friendly people. If you're thinking of visiting this land or are curious, then dive in.

1000 Miles by Bicycle - Lands End to John 'O Groats

In 2006 I celebrated my 40th birthday and decided to do something to remember.Together with my friend David Hembrow who also turned 40 the same year I cycled from Lands End to John 'O Groats, the full length of the British mainland, a distance of just over 1000 miles. It was quite a trip. "Glad I did it, wouldn't do it again".

Bikes and Cycling

I've always loved bikes, the feeling of freedom of being out in the fresh air under your own power. Bikes are fun, and you get your exercise while saving money. Best of all, they don't pollute the environment or waste precious resources.

I wrote a few words about the bikes I've owned here.

Philosophy

Also on this site, a few essays I wrote during my study of philosophy.  This is a subject that has always fascinated me, to think about the whys and wherefores of things that are normally assumed as obvious common sense. A few years ago I studied an 'A' level in philosophy at evening classes, and as part of that I wrote some essays, which is where the real study of philosophy comes together. Because it's only when you start to explain ideas on paper that you find out if you have really grasped them.

So I hope you will find these writings interesting and that they can provoke a few thoughts. As with many things it is the journey that is important in studying Philosophy rather than the result. In fact in this subject results are few and far between, but the process of thinking about the questions and ordering one's ideas is the reward in itself.

Causes and Effects This essay looks at the theories of the Scottish philosopher David Hume on what it really means when we say one thing causes another.

Aristotle and Ergon Aristotle tried to reason what is the function of a human being, in other words what is the proper way to live, by looking at the qualities that make us unique as beings and how we should best apply these abilities to live well.

Socrates and Wrongdoing Socrates argued that doing wrong was worse than suffering wrong, this essay tries to analyse whether this is true.
