MUSIC

Your PC can be a great device for not only playing music, but also downloading free music and converting your music collection to play on your portible MP3 player.

Playing

There are countless applications for playing music on your PC. One of the most famous would have to be Winamp which comes in both a freeware version and a paid version with additional functionality such as CD ripping and burning.

If you have a DVD writer, one of the first things you'll want to try is copying a DVD. This isn't as easy as it sounds because most commercial DVD's are dual-layer, which is twice the capacity of your standard blank DVD. Luckily there are lots of software available that will compress the video to fit on a single blank DVD. For this purpose Chemos recommends 1Click DVD Copy which is simple to use and gives outstanding results. It is available for download as a free trial. See the warez section on how you can get full functionality for free.

Ripping

DVD ripping refers to the process of copying the video from a DVD to a compressed file on your hard disk. This usually creates a file with a .mpg or .avi extension that will play on your computer. Such files can sometimes be downloaded using BitTorrent.

To rip and play .avi files you'll also need the correct codec installed. Chemos recommends the K-Lite Codec Pack which will install all the most common codec's.

For DVD ripping Chemos recommends DVDx, a freeware download with all the functionality you'll need. This tutorial is helpful with getting familar with it's use (note that if you have AnyDVD installed you won't need DVD Decrypter and can rip directly from the DVD).

If you need to edit .avi files Chemos recommends VirtualDub-MPEG2, another excellent piece of freeware.
