WHO is FreeWebTown Community?
We're a group of experienced Internet professionals who've been working
together as a team (off and on) since 1995. Our parent company,
Tulip Systems,
Inc., offers International shared hosting solutions as well as dedicated and
customized web hosting solutions.
WHAT is FreeWebTown Community? (or what is the "purpose" of FreeWebTown?)
Our purpose, simply put, is all about encouraging, enabling, and simplifying
new website creation on the Internet. We provide free hosting for some of the
Internet's most interesting, true-to-life, honest, entertaining and engaging
websites online today. Our users have free reign to create whatever they wish
(so long as they comply with our
AUP).
WHEN did FreeWebTown Community become started?
Our origins go all the way back to 1997, when we developed a unique mass
website hosting system design and infrastructure for a client of ours. This
concept (slightly modified) eventually became what FreeWebTown is today. The
site has been around since 2002, when we began beta testing with live users,
then in August of 2004 we went "officially live" with about 9,000 signed up
users. Since then we have adapted to necessary changes, and as a result, we
currently host over 300,000 signed up users and continue to grow very rapidly.
WHERE is FreeWebTown Community located? Where is the central focus of the
Community?
We are physically located in class-A office space in beautiful Atlanta,
Georgia, USA. Our office facility boasts its own secured, raised-floor
data
center, that we fully manage and maintain. Our focus is the entire world, at
least those who are online. We hope to gain more and more exposure into all
parts of the world.
WHY does FreeWebTown Community offer free hosting with no advertising?
For three (3) main reasons:
- Empower the masses; we wanted anyone online to be able to afford a website
without forced advertising, gimmicks or misleading schemes.
- Cutting-edge technology; we wanted to see how our custom-developed
solution holds up when faced with: massive amounts of traffic, tens of thousands
of new users, exponential resource constraints, and other real-life issues while
testing on a massive scalable production web hosting environment.
- Cover our costs (or more); currently, the advertising we display doesn't
even come close to us covering our day-to-day expenses.
HOW do you keep FreeWebTown Community online? How are you able to cover your
expenses?
We're constantly looking for new ways to generate revenue while keeping with
the essential theme of offering free web hosting services with no forced ads,
but it is a significant challenge. Our bandwidth and other data center-related
expenses easily amount to $15,000.00 to $20,000.00 every single month. While we
don't yet expect to make any profits from FreeWebTown Community, we would
eventually hope to at least cover all related expenses. As an existing business
we have an infrastructure that makes all this possible with the means to sustain
our growth and expenses for the forseeable future. We try to focus
"pay-as-you-go" features (like "bandwidth overages") on those things that cost
the most to maintain. We feel it's fair to expect those who use the most
resources to have to pay to keep them going. In the general scheme of things, we
expect that the overwhelming majority of our users won't ever need to pay for
any of our services.
