Info and links on New Orleans garage, punk, alternative bands 1965-2000

This is a work in progress. More bands will be added as I get the details, and more links and info will be continually added. The emphasis on this page is for defunct bands. For info on current New Orleans bands, check out liveneworleans.com. If any of the details are wrong or if you have additional info, please contact me. For more info see our main page at fiddycentdraft or our main index. We also have index pages for Baton Rouge bands and Lafayette bands.

The Normals
Town: New Orleans
Members: David Brewton (Guitar, Vocals), Charlie Hanson (Guitar, Vocals), Steve Walters (Bass), Chris Luckette (Drums, vocals)
Years: 1977-84
Notes: The Normals were one of the first and probably the most highly regarded of the early NOLA punk bands. They released one 7" on New Orleans' 'Lectric Eye label (owned by Carlos Boll of The Skinnies.) More recently they released a cd compilation of demo and unreleased tracks on Airline 61 Records called "Your Punk Heritage". They certainly never got anywhere near the recognition that they deserved. Chris Luckette was also later in The Cold and Dash Rip Rock. Steve Walters later played with Cowboy Mouth. Charlie Hanson was (maybe?) later in Philadelphia's The Vels.

Red Army
Town: New Orleans
Years: 1988-90
Members: Mark Albers - lead vocals, Steve Wilson - guitar, Ian Miller - bass, vocals, Jon Bleyer - drums, Jason Floyd - lead vocals, Erick Santero - lead vocals, Nate Peek - bass
Notes: Red Army was a New Orleans-based punk band active from 1988-90. In addition to memorable performances at such landmarks as Storyville and Tipitina's, Red Army was notorious for their vocal opposition to racism during the height of David Duke’s popularity in Louisiana. In October 1989 Red Army recorded ten tracks at Stonee's Studio in New Orleans, four of which were released as the Misspent Youth 7"ep under the band's own Robot Tank label. All 500 copies were quickly sold after favorable reviews in MRR and elsewhere. Red Army reunited after seventeen years for Raise the Dead Festival II.

S.I.K.
Town: Marrero
Years: 1989-1992
Members: Chris "Pig" Poleto-vocals, Mike Reed-lead guitar, Bobby Bergeron-rhythm guitar (bass on "Testimony To War"), Alcide "Al" Pitre-drums and we went through a multitude of bassists: Charlie Hurst, Rod Miller ("Minor Threat"), A.J. Spicer ("Individualism Feared"), Brian Donewar ("World View") and Jay Schneider, in the end, Bobby set his guitar aside and took over on bass.
Notes: From their myspace site - "S.I.K. formed in 1989 at Bobby's dad's house in Marrero, Louisiana. The band's members were from all over the West Bank, from Marrero to Bridge City to Waggaman. We stuck around until early 1992 then called it a day. We had no agenda.. just to play thrash metal (which incorporated funk and punk influences a bit down the line) and have fun. The closest that we got to "fame" is appearing on a 7" compilation ep titled "New Orleans Scene:Allow No Downfall" with Soilent Green, Slugs (who later became Crowbar) and The Detrimentz. In our lifespan as a band, we'd shared the stage with: Soilent Green, Slugs, The Detrimentz, Catch 22, Armed Response, No Destination, Malignant Minds, New Religion, Haate, Presto, Organized Confusion, Crucial Change (from Mobile, Alabama) and some southern rock cover band at the Buckwheat Festival in Manchac, Louisiana.(for real! this is no joke!) After the band dissolved (which for some reason, nobody knows why...) Mike switched to drums and formed a band with Pig (and Aaron and Dave) which went through a few names before ending with Giant Robot Monster. Presently, Mike and Brian and Aaron are in a band with a vocalist named William called Re/Fluxx. They are hoping to start playing in early 2007, so keep an eye/ear out for them."

From Gary: "After Star, I formed a group called White Tiger with Danny Muro, Guitarist, and White Tiger eventually wound up with Neil Arsaga as singer, Billy Drew on Drums, who played with the Backstabbers and Contenders. White Tiger moved to New York, as did Zebra in 1977. Our big break came in the eve of the Super Bowl 1977 when WT was playing at a Night Club in Fat City. A couple of New York Club Owners and Booking Agents seen us and invited the Band to NY for one months worth of bookings. Well the band took off and became the most popular band in New Jersey and New York area."
