Notice the central man clutching his shield strap over his shoulder. Right panel. Detail of scabbard. Close-up of shield with scorpion decoration. The inscription of Domitian (AD 95/96) on the back that was chiseled out and hidden when the monument was constructed (so-called damnatio memoriae - a modern appellation).
